The BUFFALO YOUTH MEDIA INSTITUTE is a community history and youth media program geared towards the diverse population of young people living in Buffalo and surrounding areas. Combining media production, media literacy, and cultural studies in its 9-month curriculum, youth producers, selected through a competitive application process, work with professional filmmakers and historians to create their own self-directed documentaries about Buffalo.
- Write, shoot and edit a documentary using professional equipment and techniques.
- Learn more about your community and its history.
- Earn a stipend of up to $1000 upon successful completion of the program
The program begins October 2007 and ends in June 2008. This includes after-school and weekend classes. Squeaky Wheel provides the equipment and training with professional historians and filmmakers. This year's program will focus on Buffalo's East Side. Youth producers will study the history, architecture, culture and civic issues of this overlooked neighborhood and make self-directed documentaries based on their own research and interests.
