The second REEL QUEER of 2016 brings Lizzie Borden’s feminist science-fiction documentary (!) Born in Flames to Buffalo! The phrase “as relevant today as the day it was made” is so overused to become cliché, but rarely is it as apt as it is for Borden’s ferocious film that picks apart the classism, racism, and sexism plaguing activists in a not-quite utopia in the not-quite distant future-past. The films arguments and negotiated activisms continue to play themselves out in our day-to-day, and remains not only a classic of 80s indie cinema, but a prime example of a collaborative and political filmmaking process.

“This unruly, unclassifiable film — perhaps the sole entry in the hybrid genre of radical-lesbian-feminist sci-fi vérité — premiered two years into the Reagan regime, but its fury proves as bracing today as it was back when this country began its inexorable shift to the right.” – Melissa Anderson

Born in Flames (dir. Lizzie Borden)
90 min, dvd, USA, 1983
With Honey, Adele Bertei, Jean Satterfield, Florynce Kennedy

“The movie that rocked the foundations of the early Indie film world, this provocative, thrilling and still-relevant classic is a comic fantasy of female rebellion set in America ten years after the Second American Revolution. When Adelaide Norris, the black radical founder of the Woman’s Army, is mysteriously killed, a diverse coalition of women – across all lines of race, class, and sexual preference – emerges to blow the System apart.
Featuring early cameos by Kathryn Bigelow and Eric Bogosian.” – First Run Pictures
