Cages & Wooden Cities perform to Zorns Lemma

July 10, 2015 @ 9:00 pm10:00 pm EDT

M&T Second Friday at the Burchfield Penney Art Center presents a one-night only performance on The Front Yard @ The Center, paying tribute to film pioneer Hollis Frampton!

This performance features a three-panel projection of Hollis Frampton’s groundbreaking film, Zorns Lemma—a seminal masterwork of structural cinema from 1970, is part of Squeaky Wheel’s annual Silent/Sound series which pairs silent films with a live score composed and performed live by local and national musicians. Named for a mathematical axiom relating to set theory, Zorn’s Lemma is a three-part film that moves beyond the alphabet and words to create a highly structured lexicon of patterned images. It remains, along with Michael Snow’s Wavelength and Tony Conrad’s The Flicker, one of the best known examples of structural filmmaking.

The musical accompaniment for this 60-minute film includes live performances by two of Buffalo’s most celebrated and innovative music acts, Cages (Nola Ranallo, David Bailey) and Wooden Cities (TJ Borden, cello; Evan Courtin, violin; Brendan Fitzgerald, percussion; Nathan Heidelberger, French horn; Michael McNeill, keyboards; Katie Weissman, cello). Cages raw, emotional-sound-worlds transform cold, bleak electronics with the warmth of acoustic instrumentation and voice to create blooms of flourishing colors. Wooden Cities, under musical direction of Brendan Fitzgerald, is both a chamber ensemble and a collective of performers and composers that performs new works by emerging composers while continuing to present works by some of the essential, yet underrepresented composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Fitzgerald is currently the Director of Instrumental Music at Canisius High School.

This one-night performance is an ancillary event to the ongoing Hollis Frampton exhibition at Squeaky Wheel Film & Media Art Center and CEPA Gallery, courtesy of Dean Brownrout Modern/Contemporary. Hollis Frampton (1936-1984) is an avant-garde icon—a pioneering filmmaker, art theorist, and photographer—and co-founder of the highly revered SUNY Buffalo Department of Media Study program, serving as faculty from 1973-1984. The exhibition is on view from June 20-September 5, 2015.

There will be an additional Silent/Sound event, also featuring work by Hollis Frampton, on September 5 at Silo City. This one-night only performance includes selections of Frampton’s massive and unfinished film cycle, Magellan, set to a live soundtrack composed by renowned Chicago-based composer Robert A.A. Lowe, aka, Lichens. This event is free and open to the public. Progam funded by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, administered by Arts Services Initiative.
