Squeaky Wheel welcomes back Indiana-based artist Eric Souther, who will be presenting his works dissecting and investigating the history of film through the experiments of Eadward Muybridge. Featuring two of his Signal Culture produced videos, and a live performance!

Dissecting Muybridge Part I: The Moving Image, 2014
13min. 53sec., 720 x 480 SD
Dissecting Muybridge Part III: Limits of Chronophotography, 2014
14min. 32sec., 720 x 480 SD
Dissecting Muybridge recontextualizes Eadweard Muybridge’s late nineteenth century chronophotography, to both critique and analyze the language of film through the immediacy of video. The work is divided into three parts that trails the moving image’s evolution into film, analog video, and digital video.
Technical Details for Part I: Image processing included the Hearn Video System, the Doepfer Modular Synthesizer, and system throughput was created with Processing, After Effects, and Premiere Pro. Work was developed at Signal Culture in Feb. 2014.
Technical Details for Part III: Image processing included the Hearn Video System, the Doepfer Modular Synthesizer, and system throughput was created with Processing, After Effects, and Premiere Pro. Work was developed at Signal Culture in Feb. 2014.

Multiplying Muybridge, 2014
Live performance, 720 x 480 SD Wide-screen
Multiplying Muybridge is a hybrid analog/digital performance that utilizes an analog synthesizer to create real-time pattern generation in processing. Processing sends those frames then to Max/msp for live chroma-keying. Direct changes to the audio change how you see the layers of video. Audio is controlled via interacting with the synthesizers LFO’s, depth sensors connected to control voltage to synth, and variables from drift speed from processing controls pitch on two VCOs.

Eric Souther is a video and new media artist who creates explores the ritualistic spaces of media and develops interactive systems for real-time manipulation of time-based media. His work has been featured nationally and internationally at venues such as the Museum of Art and Design, NYC, Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY and the ART DATA LAB, Beijing. His work has been screened in The Outcasting: Fourth Wall Festival, Grangetown, UK, Cronosfera Festival, Alessandria, Italy, and the Galerija 12 New Media Hub, Belgrade, Serbia. He received his M.F.A. in Electronic Integrated Arts from Alfred University. Currently he is an Assistant Professor of New Media at Indiana University South Bend.
