Jason Livingston in Person!

#RUSHES, 25min, 16mm, live sound, 2012-2013
Under Foot & Overstory, 35min, 16mm on video, sound, 2005

Squeaky Wheel, in conjunction with the PLASMA series at the UB Department of Media Study, is excited to present an in-person event with Iowa-based filmmaker Jason Livingston and his experimental documentaries, mixed with live performance, on the nature of activism.

With THE REBUILT ENVIRONMENT, Livingston presents 2 works. #RUSHES, an in-camera film shot on the 1-year anniversary – birthday party, celebration, funeral – of Occupy Wall Street, has evolved into a live voiceover performance that frames the failure of positioning film art as a micro-allegory for OWS politics. An unresolved piece that embraces antagonism, #RUSHES is an unresolved, ongoing discussion. Under Foot & Overstory documents an environmental group’s process to determine its mission statement. In maintaining non-synchronous sound for its duration, the film begs many questions about human beings’ relations to the non-human world, most pointedly around the capacity for symbolic systems to contain or delineate an overgrown, poorly-managed commons, in this case an unruly semi-urban park.

Jason Livingston is a film and video maker from Upstate NY currently teaching at the University of Iowa. His work has received awards and been programmed at many festivals and venues, including Rotterdam, Anthology Film Archives, the Austrian Museum, Media City, Margaret Mead and more. Under Foot & Overstory, winner of a Jury Prize from the New York Underground Film Festival, can be rented from the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre. Some of his recent video work can be seen as part of ETC: Experimental Television Center 1969-2009, a 5-DVD Anthology distributed by Electronic Arts Intermix. He is also a recipient of a New York State Council of the Arts Individual Artist Grant for his work-in-progress, INTERSTATE.
