Artist Talk & BIKE HACK workshop w/ Jessica Thompson

Learn about Jessica Thompson's engaging body of work that encourages playful interactions with electronics and objects of the everyday at her artist presentation from 1-2pm.

As part of Beyond/In WNY 2010: Alternating Currents, Thompson's work is on view at Squeaky Wheel until Dec. 4th, 2010, featuring the Swinging Suitcase and a rentable walking machine.

BIKE HACK + SOUNDRIDE (2-5pm) is a collaborative workshop & mobile sound performance that enables participants to contribute to the acoustic ecology of the city through simple sonic experimentation. Participants are invited to construct bicycle-mounted noisemakers made of contact microphones, playing cards & mini amplifiers and take part in a large-scale soundride through the city. All electronics will be provided for participants to use & keep. The DIY Bike Hack Kits include a cool mini-amp by Zinky Electronics, contact mic parts, and one playing card. Space is limited to 20, sign up online in advance!
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Jessica Thompson is a new media artist whose projects explore social interactions within public space through sound, performance and mobile technologies. Her sound pieces create collaborative situations with audiences, where the integrity of the artwork is determined by willing participants.
Her projects have been shown in exhibitions and festivals such as ARCO, (Madrid) MACO, (Mexico City) dp003, (Dundee, Scotland) ISEA 2006, (San Jose, CA) the Conflux Festival, (New York), Thinking Metropolis, (Copenhagen) InterAccess Artist Run Centre, (Toronto) Video Pool, (Winnipeg) and most recently at the Deep Wireless Festival of Radio and Transmission Art. She lives and works between Toronto, Canada and Buffalo, New York and is an MFA Candidate in the Department of Media Study at the University at Buffalo.
Her work is represented by p|m Gallery in Toronto, Canada.
