What is the Buffalo Youth Media Institute?
Squeaky Wheel's Buffalo Youth Media Institute is a community history and youth media program targeting the diverse population of young people living in Buffalo and surrounding areas. Each year, applications are available for students from 9-12 grade are able to apply. Accepted students are selected through a competitive application process. Tuition is free for this intensive curriculum that combines media production, media literacy, and cultural studies. Our youth producers work with professional filmmakers and members of the community to create their own self-directed documentaries about Buffalo. Each year, the Buffalo Youth Media Institute chooses a theme that allows students to explore local history, culture and social issues. This year’s theme is Buffalo Life Stories and each student, or pair of students, will choose a local person of interest as the focus of their documentary. We will be accepting applications for the next BYMI in late August 2010, early September 2010. Please check back on our site at that time for application information.
