Here & Now Regional Artist Showcase is a seasonal series that features media makers from all over Western New York. This show takes place in our upstairs & downstairs gallery, featuring two installations by two different artists that utilize an innovative approach to the use of film and tape loops. Emulsion Studies by Justin Chouinard (Buffalo) and Revolutions in Buffalo by Keir Neuringer (Ithaca). The show will be on public view through August 20, during gallery hours: Tues. - Thursday, 1-7pm, Fri & Sat, 1-5pm. The Opening Reception for this exhibition will take place on Saturday, June 18th from 7-10pm, with presentations by artists at 8pm.
Following this event at 10pm, there will be an after-party with a whole other performance by Keir Neuringer + performances by Space Mummy 5000 (Kevin Cain & James Horbett), Jax Deluca, & Kevin Hammond. The after-party event will take place at
The Vault (just one block south on Main St.)
Emulsion Studies is a multi-piece film and video installation stemming from Chouinard’s recent film and performance works. Wrinkled, torn, layered film emulsion resides separate from its celluloid base upon alternate planes of windows and picture frames. Image is pulled apart in physical space and brought back together through light to question the presence of cinema when its elements are separate from each other yet occupy the same space.
Revolutions in Buffalo posits a space where ideas, sound, and image revolve and resonate to the point of exhaustion of the physical, aesthetic, and conceptual material. Neuringer’s reel-to-reel tape loops surrounding the exhibition space become timekeeping mechanisms, in which time is fluid, dynamic, degrading over time. They record the space using technology that is a rebellion against the passage of industrial time. In this resonating, saturated space, text functions as image, as agitprop (in the Brechtian sense), and as a provocation for observers to become actors.
Artist Bios:
JUSTIN CHOUINARD is a film and performance artist currently based in Buffalo working in a variety of media including camera-less film, animation, video, and expanded cinema. His pieces explore themes such as the mechanics of perception, the reflexive qualities of film, and cinema’s dual nature as time + light experience and object experience. He is most recently concentrated in a series of private and public film/projector performances exploring artist and apparatus relationships. He has taught various courses in production and theory at UB where he is a current MFA candidate.
KEIR NEURINGER composes & improvises acoustic & electronic music, writes socio-political performance texts & essays, & creates interdisciplinary artworks, all with the aim of bringing audiences into a state of emotional & intellectual curiosity that meets the conditions for meaningful dialogue with, & transformation of, the culture at large. Over the last 25 years he has cultivated a personal & intensely physical approach to solo saxophone improvisation that honors & builds upon diverse music-making traditions. He also plays analogue electronics & farfisa organ, & sings & narrates text. He has been an active participant in the experimental music scenes in Krakow, The Hague, and Amsterdam, and currently lives in Central New York.
When not performing solo, Neuringer works with virtuoso bassist Rafal Mazur, experimental turntablist DJ Sniff, Dutch contemporary music group Ensemble Klang, & has performed with free improvisation legends Evan Parker & Mischa Mengelberg & electronic music pioneers Michel Waisvisz, Joel Ryan & Marek Choloniewski. He has released UNISON LINES (Not Two 2010) with Mazur as well as the cassette tape CONQUISTADORS under his Afghanistan project and two CDs under the moniker THE LOVE STORY.
